Lacking the confidence to venture off into the woods on your own? Don’t really know what to expect, but always wanted to try? Trouble finding a hiking partner? Do you have what it takes to find your way in the outdoors? This is your portal to find out and start enjoying the great outdoors. If this is you, then read on.

This event will begin with a discussion of things to be considered when venturing out on your own for a day hike. This is a great opportunity to explore hiking and decide if it really is for you before spending money on the appropriate gear for more advanced exploits, like backpacking and camping.

o Finding trails...
Urban, Rural, Remote, Wilderness, Grocery Stores
o Choosing trails appropriate for your skills...
Trail type and condition, elevation. Don’t start with an Everest Basecamp Trek.
o Gear...
Clothing, Shoes, Socks, and yep, even the skivvies…
o Partner(s) and Solo Hiking – Beware…you may just really get to know someone. That can be a good or a bad thing.
o Deciphering Blazes and Trail Markers...
What’s with the paint on the trees anyway?!?
o Navigation
I can read a compass…that’s north! There’s a wee more to it than that.
o First Aid...
My advice…Simple, don’t break stuff. What should you be carrying?
o 10 Essentials -
These are things you should really take on any hike, the basics. (No, your cell phone is actually not one of them.)

After the workshop we will head down the trail for a short hike and put it all into action. This workshop will build your confidence enough to venture out on more extensive outings away from the city. Watch for those events and put your new found skills to the test.
