Get started learning some basic navigation skills. If you plan to spend any time outdoors hiking, backpacking, hunting, fishing or anything of that nature, it pays to know how to get around with and without electronics. You can explore around the next bend without worry.

This workshop will cover maps and many of the common icons found in the legend of maps. We will cover contour lines, scale and much more. Then we will dive into compasses and figuring those contraptions out. There's way more to navigating properly than just pointing north.

This is hands on class, that's the best way to learn and retain information. We will practice with the compasses and do some easy (and fun) exercises that you can do on your own as well.

Topics covered:

  • Understanding Maps

  • Map Scale, Legends and Symbols

  • Types of maps

  • Magnetic North, True North & Declination

  • Orienting Your Map

  • Compass parts and terms

  • Azimuth, Bearing, Back Bearing

  • Line of sight, Aiming Off

  • Measuring Distance

  • Putting it all together with real life applications and exercises
